Two people are dead and a four-year-old child in hospital after a suspicious house fire on a Saskatchewan First Nation.

RCMP say they responded to a call about two injured males in a home on the Ahtahkakoop First Nation around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Police say relatives had found the injured males in the home, but they had to leave to call police due to poor cell phone coverage.

When Mounties arrived at the home, it was engulfed in flames. Officers and witnesses tried to search the home, but their efforts were hampered by the intense smoke and heat.

The remains of two people were later found in the charred home. A four-year-old girl who was rescued from the fire by a witness was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

RCMP say the fire is being treated as suspicious, but that the scene may need to cool for a few days before it can be examined.

An autopsy is scheduled in Saskatoon later this week to determine the identities of the deceased and the cause of death.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call Shellbrook RCMP at 306-747-2606 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
