Newly re-elected Regina MP Ralph Goodale is being touted as a potential successor to Michael Ignatieff after the Liberal leader tendered his resignation Tuesday.

Goodale, the deputy leader of the Liberals, has been asked to convene a caucus meeting next week to determine who should lead the party in the House of Commons.

However, he says it's too early to tell who among the Liberals' 34 elected MPs is best suited for the job.

"This is really uncharted water here," Goodale told reporters. "This hasn't happened in terms of the Liberal Party, so we'll have to be very careful about it.

"I think it's important to be inclusive in this process so that there's no one in the party that feels that somehow they've been overlooked or neglected."
