A man has been shot by police after a 45-minute standoff in Melfort. Witnesses tell CTV news the man refused to surrender, and shot at police, prompting them to fire back.

Neighbours say they heard a noise outside, and then saw flashing lights. A quick look showed police cars with officers standing behind them, guns drawn.

RCMP say they got a call about a domestic dispute involving guns. They say they spotted the 45-year-old man driving away, and the chase led them to the house off Main Street in Melfort.

The man was armed with what police are calling a long gun. They have not released other details - but witnesses say the standoff escalated to shooting.

After the gunfire a witness says he heard the suspect call out that he'd been shot. He heard the police tell the suspect to drop his gun and come out. Police also told the suspect there was an ambulance ready to transport him to hospital – but he still didn't leave the house.

Instead of laying down the gun and going to the hospital, neighbours say the man continued to put up a fight, shooting another round out of the house.

Eventually the man laid down his gun and surrendered to police. Residents say it was an intense 45 minutes that's changed the way they think of their quiet neighbourhood.

RCMP say the man's injuries are not life threatening, and that he is now at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon under police guard. Regina police will be investigating the shooting.
