Saskatchewan NDP Leader Dwain Lingenfelter and two members of his team are in training at a Regina boxing club as the party prepares for an election fight against Premier Brad Wall's government.

"As politicians we don't get out and work out enough," Lingenfelter told CTV News.

"I'm going to try to make this a bit of a trend down here."

Regina New Democrat MLA Trent Wotherspoon and the party's media director Sandra Jackle are also in training at New Line Boxing Academy.

"I work out regularly, but this is tough," Wotherspoon said.

Indeed, it's no easy ride. Lingenfelter is in the same class as a few members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders who are getting into shape for the upcoming season.

"They were a little stiff but they work hard, they were pushing themselves," said Riders defensive tackle Marcus Adams.

"I know it wasn't easy for them, but I'm glad they came down and did it with us."

Moses Alli of New Line Boxing Academy says the politicians made good progress in their first day of training.

"In not even an hour of teaching, they caught on to it," Alli said. "Give me six weeks with them and I'll turn them into boxers."

Lingenfelter should be down to fighting weight by the time the fall election rolls around as he tries to deliver the knockout punch needed to win.
